Alley Policy
Alleys are a vital part of the city's right-of-way. They provide access to properties, help shape neighborhoods, and create resilient street networks.
Alley’s Classification
Alleys in the City of Chattanooga can be classified into one of three types:
Type of Alley | Description | Usability | Maintenance | Additional Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Open Alleys | Platted and accepted by the city | Usable for mobility or services | Maintained by the city | |
Unopened Alleys | Platted only and not accepted by the city | Typically not usable | Not maintained by the city | Available for future use with processes for public utilization. Home builders can build to city standards and request acceptance by the city. |
Abandoned Alleys | Formerly platted but officially dissolved through abandonment process | Not usable | Not applicable | Right-of-way lines dissolved, reverting land to original property owners |
