Marriage License

In Tennessee, a marriage license is mandatory before a marriage can officially occur. Applicants can obtain a marriage license at the Hamilton County Clerk's Office.

What Are The Requirements?

  • Both applicants must be over 18 years of age.
  • Both must be present when applying for the license.
  • Both must present valid photo identification, such as a driver's license.

How Do I Apply?

Visit the County Clerk's Office or Clerk's Office in Chattanooga.

Complete a marriage license application. You can do this online or in person.

Copy of a Marriage Certificate 

Get a certified copy of a marriage certificate online, by mail, in person, or by calling (423) 209-6500. Requests are mailed the same day. The office is open Mon-Fri from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. When calling the clerk's office, provide the couple's names (including maiden name if applicable) and date of marriage.

What Is The Cost?

  • Pay the corresponding fee. Make sure you know the exact cost, as it may vary.
  • $5.00 plus $1.19 postage is the cost of obtaining a certified copy of a marriage certificate.
