The Neighborhood Traffic Management Program version 2.0

Over its more than 20-year history, the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program has evolved to better meet the traffic safety needs of city residents. The original program relied almost entirely on speed tables for traffic calming but the program has expanded to include other calming methods when speed tables are not the most effective solution.

The revised program makes use of a variety of calming measures such as:

  • Neighborhood traffic circles
  • Chicanes
  • Rumble strips
  • Lane width reduction

Public engagement is a key element of the updated program. Residents requesting calming play a role in showing community support through a petition and are consulted on the layout and type of calming implemented.

Our new tool kit also focuses on traffic calming in neighborhood centers, commercial, and mixed-use areas by incorporating on-street parking, bicycle lanes, and other traffic calming tools.

Speed tables, traffic circles, and other traffic calming measures have been installed. Number is now over 230 as of July 2024.
