Urban Forestry Permitting

Jump to:

The Chattanooga Tree Ordinance prohibits the removal or disturbance of any public tree without a permit. It also sets out procedures for replanting trees when removal is unavoidable, and general planting specifications.

In coordination with the Land Development Office, Urban Forestry Staff administer the Tree Ordinance Permit. This permit is most commonly applied for along with a Complex Land Disturbing Permit, but may be required for any construction or non-construction impact to trees on City property.

The need for a permit is triggered by:

  • Proposed tree planting on City property
  • Proposed tree removal on City property
  • Proposed pruning or any type of disturbance, above or below ground, within the Critical Root Zone of a tree on City property.
