Biosolids Management System

Chattanooga's Moccasin Bend Wastewater Treatment Plant produces biosolids from the Solids Handling System which is recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture as a soil amendment (fertilizer). With a 5-star rating from the American Public Works Association, the city's biosolids program produces approximately 70,000 wet tons of material annually.

About Biosolids Program

The City of Chattanooga's Biosolids Program is monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Bureau.

There are currently over 200 farms throughout 14 Tennessee Counties participating in the program consisting of over 33,760 permitted acres.

The City has contracted with Synagro South for the transportation and land application of their beneficial reuse product, which has been certified by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture as a commercial fertilizer.
