Art in the Neighborhoods

With generous support from the Lyndhurst Foundation, initiative offered matching grant money to each of the City’s council districts to acquire public art for neighborhoods and involved neighborhood groups in the selection process. Funding: Up to $7500 per district was funded by the Lyndhurst Foundation.
80% of the grant was matched dollar-for-dollar with private funds raised by citizens in each community and 20% was contributed by the Public Art Program.

District 2 | Councilwoman Sally Robinson
A Northshore Public Art Committee raised funds to commission a permanent sculpture which was voted on via a web poll and ballots at businesses. The winning sculpture, Chattanooga Music Man, by James Simon, is installed at Woodlawn and Frazier Ave.

District 3 | Councilwoman Pam Ladd
The Hixson community voted for their favorite sculpture via a web poll and ballots at businesses in district 3. The winning piece called Arise, by Andy Light, was installed at Access Road and Hixson Pike in November of 2009.

District 6 | Councilwoman Carol Berz
The Brainerd community chose two sculptures that reflect their theme of “community and diversity”. Rolling Dancing Moons, by Reven Marie Swanson, and Winds of Change, by Cecilia Lueza, were installed in July 2009 at the Brainerd tunnels.

District 7 | Councilman Manny Rico
Working with Calvin Donaldson Elementary, Public Art Chattanooga assisted with the installation of Eagle's Nest which was installed March 2010 on the school grounds.

District 8 | Councilman Andrae McGary
Prominently installed on the front lawn of the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga in September 2009, the sculpture Family Revolution by Garry Bibbs, represents family empowerment and reinforces the Urban League’s commitment to empowering families throughout our city.

Two other districts are assembling their community groups and developing ideas for site and projects.
