04-10-2013 Firefighters Rescue Woman from Tram Shaft

Battalion Chief Lesley Morgan said the elevator shaft is at the lower end of the tram that carries pedestrians partially up the hill on 1st Street. The woman stepped out of the tram and then reportedly fell approximately 10 feet to the bottom of the shaft. Chief Morgan said she was injured in the fall and could not get out on her own.

A medic with Hamilton County EMS stayed with the victim in the shaft while members of the fire department's Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) set up rescue operations. Captain David Thompson Jr. with Squad 1 said a rope and pulley system was hooked up to the aerial on Quint 1, which was used as a crane. After getting the victim into a Stokes basket, she was carefully lifted out of the shaft and handed over to EMS personnel. The woman was then transported to Erlanger Medical Center for treatment. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Information on the woman's condition was not available.
