Lt. Charles Chavis with Quint 16 said heavy smoke and fire was visible in the single-story home when the first firefighters arrived on the scene.
The firefighters were met by the homeowner, who said that he, his father, two children and a dog all got out safely. The firefighters eventually got the blaze under control, but there was substantial damage to the house. No injuries were reported.
The homeowner told firefighters that the fire started in the kitchen, from an electrical cord hooked up to a toaster. The homeowner said they tried to put the fire out themselves before calling 911.
