03-10-14 Firefighters Put Out 2nd Grass Fire at National Cemetery

Battalion Chief Chris Willmore said windy conditions help push the flames around to burn up about one acre of grass. Once on the scene, the firefighters used a handheld hoseline and a deck gun from a couple of fire trucks to quickly extinguish the fire. Lt. Henry McElvain with the Fire Investigation Division said the fire scorched about 500 head stones.

This is the second grass fire to occur at the cemetery this year. The first fire occurred January 19, 2014 and scorched about five acres. The cause of that fire was also not determined. Lt. McElvain said investigators with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the state bomb and arson office will be involved in this ongoing investigation.
