06-01-16 Firefighters to Install Free Smoke Alarms Throughout the City This Saturday

This event was created to commemorate the Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office 100th anniversary.

Fire Marshal Beau Matlock says firefighters at all 19 fire stations will visit home after home in their districts and install free smoke alarms where needed. Chief Matlock says the goal is to install 230 smoke alarms throughout the city. "We are happy to participate in the state fire marshal's "100 for 100" event," says Matlock. "We've been conducting similar events like this with the Red Cross for years in Chattanooga, and every time we do this, we're making homes safer."

The smoke alarms, which have 10-year lithium batteries, were provided by the state fire marshal's office. This is the first time the entire fire department will be mobilized to install smoke alarms at the same time.

Smoke alarms provide an early warning of a fire, giving people additional time to escape and avoid injury or death. Three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. (Source: NFPA)
