Chattanooga firefighters responded to a large vacant house fire early this morning. They received the initial alarm at 12:41 a.m. and responded with four fire companies to 2800 E. 18th Street Place.

[Update]  The cause of this morning's fire at 1802 Foust Street has been ruled accidental. Captain Andrew Waters with the Fire Investigation Division said a candle left unattended on a dresser was the likely cause of the fire that devastated this family of five. The dollar loss was estimated at $50,000 for the building and contents.

An East Lake family will have to spend the night elsewhere after fire raced through their home this morning. The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 8:00 a.m. and responded to 1802 Foust Street with several fire companies. Captain Brandon Schroyer with Engine 9 said he could see a large plume of smoke from several blocks away as they rushed to the scene.

Chattanooga firefighters honored their own at an awards program tonight at the Fire Training Center on Amnicola Highway. It was the first awards program for the department and plans are to make it an annual event.

Chattanooga firefighters visited homes along the 400 block of N. Hawthorne Street this morning, knocking on doors and offering fire safety information and smoke alarms if needed.
