The CFD urges citizens to stay in the kitchen while they’re cooking following a residential fire Tuesday night. At 8:57 PM, Green Shift companies were called to a home in the 1100 block of S Greenwood Ave and found heavy smoke coming from the structure. Firefighters made their way inside to fight the fire and had it knocked down in minutes. They then spent time checking to make sure the fire didn’t spread to other areas of the house. Their swift attack and quick stop saved the residence. There were no injuries. The occupant told fire officials that he had been cooking and fell asleep. He woke up to the kitchen on fire. Ladder 1, Squad 1, Engine 5, Engine 9, Engine 4, Quint 1, Battalion 1 and Battalion 2 responded.

With Thanksgiving this week, we know everyone will be busy in the kitchen. Keep in mind that unattended cooking is a leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. Remain in the kitchen to keep an eye on your food. Use timers as reminders. Keep anything that can catch fire (oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, etc.) away from the stovetop. If you need to leave the kitchen for any reason, turn everything off.

The Chattanooga Fire Department and Waldens Ridge Emergency Service worked through a number of logistical obstacles to launch a complex firefighting operation at a home on Suck Creek Road Monday morning. The call came out at 6 AM to a residence in the 1900 block, located at the city/county line. First responding units advised that fire was through the roof and went about establishing a water supply. This was a major challenge as the closest hydrant was two miles away and the structure was at the top of a steep hill. Crews shuttled tank water to the house until a permanent water supply was set up. That was done by drafting water out of the Tennessee River and relay pumping it from the river to the scene. Two thousand feet of fire hose was used get water to the scene to fight the blaze. Firefighters made a defensive attack and got the flames knocked down. They worked for several hours, monitoring hot spots and making sure the fire was completely extinguished. Unfortunately, the home is a total loss but the homeowner was not injured. They made it out safely and called 911. The fire is under investigation, but it appears that it was caused by a heat lamp in the chicken coop adjacent to the home and the flames spread to the residence. Multiple CFD Green Shift companies responded, along with Waldens Ridge, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Hamilton County EMS and Chattanooga-Hamilton County Rescue’s Rehab Truck Response.

Suck Creek Road fire

A Hixson home sustained damage in an early morning fire that appears to have started at the back of the residence. Red Shift companies were called to the 3500 block of Enclave Bay Drive at 2:46 AM on Tuesday. Hamilton County 911 received several calls about the blaze, including reports from neighbors who saw huge flames coming from the house. Emergency personnel were informed that the residents had made it out of the burning home safely. A second alarm was called to bring additional firefighters to the scene. A water supply was quickly established and Red Shift crews attacked the fire, knocking it down quickly. They worked to keep the flames from spreading to other parts of the home. The sunroom suffered extensive damage and there’s fire, smoke and water damage in other areas. Thankfully, there were no injuries. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the impacted residents. Engine 12, Engine 22, Ladder 19, Ladder 1, Quint 10, Quint 16, Quint 17, Quint 6, Squad 19, Squad 1, Squad 7, Battalion 2, Battalion 3 (Red Shift), EPB, Chattanooga Gas, CPD, HCEMS and CFD Supply responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
