12-20-18 Increased Impaired & Distracted Driving Enforcement

The Chattanooga Police Department (CPD) and other area law enforcement agencies are working together to increase impaired and distracted driving enforcement starting at 6:00 p.m. on December 20, 2018. This increased enforcement will be accomplished through regular patrols and Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) grant funded overtime which allows law enforcement to deliberately place dozens of officers on the roadways looking for drivers who choose to endanger their lives and the lives of others.

CPD, along with other area law enforcement agencies, are urging community members and visitors to the area to be responsible when consuming alcohol during this holiday season. If you drink or are impaired by any substance, be responsible by not driving; instead, call a taxi, Uber, Lyft, or a designated driver. Chattanooga Police Officers made 758 DUI arrests in the first 11 months of 2018.

Impaired driving isn't the only traffic concern law enforcement is focusing on. Distracted driving is also dangerous and can be deadly. Texting and driving plays a significant role in distracted driving, but it also includes anything that causes a driver to divert his/her attention from the road.

The increased enforcement action runs through 6:00 a.m. January 2, 2019.
