Two disabled occupants narrowly escaped a house fire early Saturday morning on W 51st Street. The call came in at 12:15 am. Quint 14 (Green Shift) was the first crew on the scene and reported that the home was fully involved. Firefighters initiated a defensive attack. Quint 1, Squad 1, Ladder 1, Engine 9, Ladder 5 and Battalion 1 also responded. The flames were being fed by oxygen bottles. The fire was caused by one of the occupants smoking in the bed while on oxygen. Companies were on the scene for hours overnight. Then, at 6:30 AM Saturday, Blue Shift crews responded to the same house when the fire rekindled. Firefighters spent several hours working to get the fire extinguished.

The Chattanooga Fire Department worked a fire at a crash on Highway 27 Wednesday afternoon. At 2:58 PM, companies responded and found that two dump trucks had collided, including one carrying dirt. Both trucks flipped over, went off the road and caught fire. Firefighters worked to get the fire out. The drivers of the trucks had already escaped the wreck. They were both transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The Chattanooga Fire Department is reminding the public *NOT* to drive over fire hoses after an incident on Wednesday. At 12:39 PM, firefighters were called to a home in the 5500 block of Miller Drive and spotted smoke on arrival. The resident stated that they heard a pop, spotted flames in the bathroom, called 911 and quickly evacuated the structure with four children. Crews went in and located the small fire and got it out quickly. They then thoroughly checked for extension. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The American Red Cross will be assisting the impacted residents. Quint 8, Engine 15, Squad 13, Squad 7, Ladder 13, Ladder 5, Battalion 1, Battalion 2 (Green Shift), CFD’s Operations Chief, CPD, EPB and HCEMS responded.

While firefighters were working to establish a water supply to help fight the fire, a driver carelessly ran over a fire hose in the street near the scene. The hose was not charged at the time, meaning that it was flat and did not have water running through it. But driving over a fire hose at any time (charged or uncharged) is illegal and culprits face a citation and fine. Running over a fire hose endangers lives. If a hose is damaged and crews cannot get water to the scene of an active fire, then it puts firefighters at risk, as well as civilians in cases of entrapment. The driver who ran over the fire hose did not stop. Police are working to track them down based on a description of the vehicle from firefighters on the scene and possible damage to their car. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!

A barbershop sustained major damage when an SUV veered off the road and struck the structure Monday morning. It happened at 7:53 AM at Glass Street and Awtry Street. Chattanooga firefighters responded to the scene and found that a large chunk of the barbershop was gone, debris was everywhere and a vehicle was resting in the road with heavy front end damage. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. The passenger was not injured. The barbershop was closed at the time of the incident. It appears the SUV left Glass Street for unknown reasons, clipped a power pole and hit the corner of the business, coming to a stop on Awtry. A building inspector responded to look at the damage. CFD Engine 4, Battalion 3 Red Shift and our Special Operations Chief were there, as well as HCEMS, CPD, Public Works and EPB.

A quick response and fire attack kept flames from spreading in a building on the campus of Tennessee Baptist Children’s Homes Friday afternoon. The call came out at 1:46 PM to 6623 Lee Highway and firefighters found fire in the basement of the structure that contains the commissary and several cottages. Thankfully, everyone had safely evacuated the structure. Crews worked fast and had the blaze under control by 2:05 PM, within minutes of arriving on scene and establishing firefighting operations. There were heavy smoke conditions so they started overhaul with ventilation to clear the building. They also made sure there was no extension. The cause of the fire will be under investigation. One cat was rescued. There were no injuries. Due to the heat, firefighters were rotated in and out and extra companies were brought to scene for staffing. Hamilton County EMS monitored firefighters’ vitals. Thanks to our mutual aid partners for manning our stations while everyone worked this fire. Responding companies/agencies: Quint 6, Quint 8, Quint 21, Squad 13, Ladder 7, Squad 7, Engine 15, Ladder 13, Battalion 1, Battalion 2 (Green Shift), CFD Operations Chief, CFD Special Operations Chief, CFD Safety Chief, Hamilton County EMS, CFD Supply, CPD and East Ridge Squad 1.
