The Chattanooga Fire Department worked a house fire in Hixson Tuesday night and rescued several pets in the process. At 9:14 PM, a neighbor called 911 and reported that a house in the 3800 block of Memphis Drive was on fire. Blue Shift companies arrived and found flames on the exterior of the residence that were starting to spread to the interior of the home. They quickly rescued four dogs and extinguished the fire, preventing it from damaging the structure any further. No one else was home at the time. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Red Cross will be assisting two displaced adults. Quint 16, Ladder 19, Squad 19, Quint 6, Quint 10, Battalion 2, and Battalion 3 responded.

An employee at the Chattanooga VA Clinic was injured Wednesday in a flash fire inside the medical facility. CFD companies responded to a reported commercial fire at 6401 Shallowford Road at 1:11 PM. When they arrived at the clinic, staff members advised that there was a possible fire in the X-ray room. Due to potential radiological exposure, additional companies were called to the scene, as well as Special Operations. Firefighters went inside to investigate and found that the fire had already been extinguished by VA personnel. CFD crews used radiological monitors to asses the condition of the room. After they confirmed that the area was safe, firefighters checked for extension and verified that the fire had not spread anywhere else. They learned that there was a flash fire in an oxygen tank storage area in the X-ray room. One employee was injured with burns and transported to the hospital. The area was checked again and then companies were returned to service. The cause of the flash fire is under investigation. Quint 21, Quint 8, Quint 6, Ladder 7, Squad 7, Squad 13, Battalion 2, Battalion 3 (Green Shift), CPD and HCEMS responded.

VA incident

One person was injured and several residents were displaced in a duplex fire off Rossville Boulevard Wednesday morning. Units responded to a reported residential fire at 4901 English Avenue at 6:21 AM. That’s near the corner of E 49th Street and Rossville Boulevard. Engine 9 arrived and found heavy fire coming out of the front and side of the structure. Due to multiple reports of victims still inside the home, a second alarm was called to bring extra companies to the scene to assist in firefighting operations. Immediately, a search of both units was conducted to look for possible victims as the next arriving companies started to attack the fire. Primary and secondary searches were done and no one was located. Fire officials learned that all parties were accounted for and that no one was trapped in the duplex. One elderly woman sustained injuries in the fire. She was transported to the hospital with burns on her hands and smoke inhalation. Firefighters had the fire under control in approximately 45 minutes. Crews then conducted a lengthy overhaul process to extinguish all of the flames, including fire trapped in the walls. At least five people were displaced and will be receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. Several cats are deceased. Engine 9, Quint 14, Ladder 1, Squad 1, Quint 1, Ladder 5, Engine 5, Squad 20, Ladder 13, Squad 13, Battalion 1, Battalion 2, HCEMS and CPD responded. This fire occurred as the CFD underwent shift change. Firefighters ending their 24-hour shift (Blue Shift) were relieved by those beginning their 24-hour shift (Green Shift). This personnel change was handled seamlessly by all crews. Members of the Chattanooga Fire Department responded to a commercial fire at the Red Robin Restaurant inside Hamilton Place Mall early Friday morning. Red Shift companies were initially dispatched on a commercial fire alarm at 3:02 AM to 2100 Hamilton Place Boulevard. Quint 8 arrived on scene and found a light haze inside Red Robin. The Incident Commander, Captain Tim Greer, initiated a second alarm while firefighters forced entry into Red Robin and encountered a fire on the grill. Once the grill fire was extinguished, firefighters located additional extension of the fire in the interior wall and exhaust vent leading to the roof, which they also quickly extinguished. Significant smoke, water, and fire damage was sustained to the kitchen area of Red Robin. Quint 8, Quint 21, Ladder 7, Engine 15, Ladder 13, Quint 10, Quint 6, Squad 13, Squad 7 and the Battalion Chief for District 2 responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
