There were no injuries in a house fire the Chattanooga Fire Department worked early this morning. Firefighters worked to keep flames from making their way to the main living area of the home and reunited the residents with their cat.

It happened at 1 AM Wednesday in the 4700 block of Preserve Drive, off of Webb Road.

A 911 caller reported that her garage was on fire and that all of the occupants were out of the residential structure.

Quint 6, Quint 7, Squad 7, Quint 8 and Engine 4 responded to the scene and found the garage fully engulfed in flames and heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the residence.

Firefighters immediately started extinguishing the garage blaze. There was smoke on the interior of the house, but no fire. Ventilation was set up at the front door to start clearing the smoke out and the flames in the garage were knocked down rather quickly.

Crews searched the home and found the family’s cat alive and delivered the pet to the homeowners. They continued opening and closing doors and windows to ventilate the main living area and bedrooms.

There was heavy fire and smoke damage to the garage and smoke damage to the remaining parts of the home.

No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross was notified to assist the impacted family. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Preserve Dr fire

Chattanooga Fire Department investigators believe a malfunctioning desk fan was to blame for a fire at St. Jude School on Ashland Terrace.

It happened just before 10 AM Wednesday.

Quint 16 was first on the scene after receiving a report of smoke from the staff.

Firefighters searched the building and found a small fire in the mechanical room.

There was a desk in the mechanical room and investigators say a small fan on the desk overheated, starting a fire. It burned papers on the desk, went up the wall and caused an overhead pipe to burst. Water from the pipe acted as a sprinkler and put the fire out. Damage was less than $1,000.

The school was empty at the time due to COVID-19 closures.

There were no injuries.

St. Jude fire 1

A fire in a vacant duplex is under investigation.

It happened at 6:40 AM Wednesday in the 1200 block of E 13 Street.

A passerby called it in and CFD crews responded to the condemned structure.

Firefighters knocked the fire down quickly. It burnt through the floor and into a wall, causing an estimated $10,000 worth of damage.

No one was injured.

Engine 5, Quint 1, Squad 1, Ladder 1, Squad 13 and Battalion Chief 1 Blue and Green Shift responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

13 st fire 2

CFD worked a house fire Thursday at 3 AM in St. Elmo in the 4400 block of Tennessee Avenue. Quint 14, Squad 20, Quint 1, Ladder 1 and Squad 1 responded to the scene.

Quint 14 was the first unit to arrive and reported light smoke showing. They found a small fire in the basement and a quick attack was initiated to get the fire out.

One dog and four chicks were saved. Everyone else was already out of the home. The cause of the fire was determined to be a heat lamp left on near a plastic tote filled with wood chips where the residents were keeping the chicks warm.

TN Ave fire 2

A Chattanooga woman and her four young children were transported to the hospital on Monday to be treated for possible smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire in their apartment.

It happened at the Shallowford Trace Apartments just before 2 PM.

The Chattanooga Fire Department was called to Pembrook Lane to a unit in the complex and the first crew on the scene advised that the fire was already out.

The 31-year-old mother was making food on the stove when grease caught fire, creating a lot of smoke in her apartment. She tried to put the fire out, but after being exposed to the smoke, she was advised to leave the apartment with her children. A maintenance worker at the complex got the fire out with an extinguisher.

The family, thankfully, did not suffer any burns, but the woman and her four children (ages 1, 4, 6 and 8) were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters ventilated the apartment to get the smoke out.
