10-2-19 Grant to help with vital firefighter training
Thanks to a generous federal grant, the Chattanooga Fire Department will be able to enhance training for firefighters so they can be prepared for situations when their personal safety is in imminent danger.
CFD applied for and has been awarded the 2018 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The annual grant opportunity gives fire departments across the United States the ability to apply for and if awarded, to purchase apparatus, tools, equipment, gear, and training that is needed within the department’s jurisdiction with federal grant funding.
9-30-19 Two firefighters taken to hospital, apartments damaged in Hixson blaze
The Chattanooga Fire Department worked an apartment fire in Hixson that sent two firefighters to the hospital and left several units damaged.
The call came in at 6:54 PM as a smoke investigation at the Steeplechase Apartments on Cloverdale Circle.
The first arriving fire companies saw heavy smoke from Hixson Pike and heavy fire coming from backside of one of the apartment buildings.
Chattanooga police officers were helping evacuate the building as CFD pulled up.
The second alarm fire was extinguished thanks to the hard work of crews on the scene. The blaze caused heavy fire damage to two upper apartments and the roof.
9-30-19 Ambulance crews step up to help driving of burning trash truck
The Chattanooga Fire Department applauds the quick actions of Care Med Ambulance personnel who rushed to alert and aid the driver of a burning trash truck.
It happened just before 2 PM in the 1300 block of Appling Street off Riverside Drive.
The driver of the Santek garbage truck had just picked up trash at Care Med’s office and staff members saw white smoke coming out of the top of the truck so they flagged him down.
As soon as he stopped, they all heard a loud boom inside the truck and the smoke turned from white to black.
9-27-19 Fire found under floor of home
A neighbor who spotted smoke helped get fire crews to a home off Shallowford Road.
CFD was called to a house in the 2200 block of Beeler Avenue before 6:30 PM.
Smoke appeared to be coming from underneath the structure.
When firefighters arrived and went inside, there was no smoke.
They cut holes in the floor and in the side of the house. They found the fire under the flooring and got it extinguished.
9-26-19 Cigarettes to blame for Bailey Ave house fire
Chattanooga firefighters worked a house fire late Thursday night in the 2400 block of Bailey Avenue.
It happened at 11:30 PM.
Three occupants got out of the home safely before crews arrived.
There were no injuries.
Engine 5, Ladder 5, Squad 1, Engine 9, Engine 15, Squad 13, Battalion 1, and Battalion 2 (Red Shift) responded. HCEMS and Chattanooga PD also provided support on the scene.
The fire was ruled as accidental. It started on back porch and appears to be from discarded cigarettes.
