Update on New Concrete Skatepark!

Skatepark

(Update Febuary 2024)

The new skatepark continues to proceed through design, with the completion of biddable construction documents scheduled for late spring, 2024. Completion of the project drawings in spring provides time for bidding and Contractor procurement to be ready to begin construction in the new budget year, pending approval of construction funds.  Reminder for those that have followed along, the project has been fully-funded for design but only about a third funded for construction.  The Department of Parks and Outdoors has submitted a request for full funding ($2 million new dollars in addition to the previously secured $1 million) for a new state-of-the-art skatepark to replace the modular skatepark in its current location.  The City’s capital budgeting process proceeds through spring with a final Council vote typically in late June and the new budget year starting on July 1.

Other updates and facts on the project:

The new park will include something for everyone, including…

A poured-in-place concrete skatepark, featuring approximately 30,000 square feet of skatable surface.

A new all-seasons restroom building, complete with skateable roof and integrated park entry signage,

A public plaza for gatherings, events, and generally to make the park comfortable for all its visitors, regardless of whether or not they are on wheels.

A new dog park, rebuilt in a new configuration and including plentiful new trees for much better shade.

A new independent entrance straight from W 20th Street which provides convenient Riverwalk access and public on-street parking.

Skating features have been chosen by the skatepark design team (California Skatepark) based on the numerous survey responses we received and balancing with the expected project budget.  Additionally, the park features a landscape design to soften the space and provide better shade than what the current park provides.
