Time Change Comes With Important Safety Message

Jump to:

Do you have working smoke alarms in your home? Smoke alarms save lives!! Smoke detectors that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. If there is a fire in your home, you need smoke alarms to give you and your loved ones time to get out. The Chattanooga Fire Department encourages all residents to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when setting their clocks forward this Sunday. Please take this opportunity to change your clocks and change your batteries!

This Saturday, March 12th, the CFD will be hosting an event to make sure that citizens have working smoke alarms. Firefighters will be at our Training Center on Amnicola Highway handing out free smoke detectors to the public while supplies last. Recipients can then take them home and install them for life-saving protection for their families.

Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home. Test smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old do not offer reliable fire protection any longer. Determine the age of your smoke alarms by checking the manufacture date on the back of the alarm. Regardless of whether the alarms are hard-wired or battery powered, they should be replaced if they are 10 years or older.
